memory managment

is there a way too somehow limit the memory usage?? I'm running Debian3.0r2 with on it mysql and apache. No X no nothing and yet is uses at time 256MB RAM (that's all i have) but at boottime i only use 30-40MB... this is strange i'm the only one using this server as i use is as testing server. is there a command to delete all unneeded processes out of my list to clear some memory?? or do you have any hints??

TY in advance

Your memory is most likely being used for buffers and/or disk cache. This is a good thing. Post the output of free if you want a better explanation of where it's going, and search for forums for "memory management" - this question comes up frequently.

cheers

Jamie...

Linux loads extra data into memory to help speed things up. When you run an app, the memory is available for the app to use. There is no need to clear the memory as you are suggesting.

You can disable some services if they are not being used, but an inactive service uses no memory.

I hope this helps
