MCB rewrite

After extensive use of multiple rescue disks and other booting procedures, got to where even the message about not able to recognize any /sbin/init no longer relevant as had used gparted to add a new partition with a boot flag and still wasn't recognized.
Clearly everything comes back to message "Panic: MCB chain corrupted System Halted"

Sooo, is there any way to fix or, better, totally rewrite the Master Control Block? If not, looks like my whole hard drive is toast.

Any leads appreciated.
