Mapping key to command in GNOME

ok, this is getting hard, all i want to do is map some simple keycodes (they have nome name, just codes) to a command, GNOME doesn't let me map keys to scripts, i also don't have an event interface for my keyboard (its using a powerbook driver that doesn't seem to offer an event interface), so i can't use a daemon that watches the event interface

so any suggestions on what to use to do this? preferably something that doesn't need X (so i can use it when in a console), but i would settle for it if it required X

What about something like xbindkeys? I don't think it works with out X, but you never know.
