Mandrake 9.2 cooker upgrade kde 3.2

Hi...I used URPMI to upgrade from cooker kde 3.2..everything works except for some reason I can't get sound to work for my system notifications..I can play and hear/use XMMS to play music.

When I first upgraded and logged out/then in I got an informational error message saying /dev/dsp resource busy.. I rebooted..then it complains something else and asks do I want to disable the aRTS sound...I did...then re-enabled aRTS..checked the driver selection, lsmod'ed everything is loading without errors for my SB Live Value card...syslog shows nothing strange...when I go into kcontrol and check the sound files associated with the login sound and click it...I hear nothing... it has me baffled....

You could try going into System -> Configuration -> KDE -> Sound -> Sound System
and make sure that the Auto Suspend is set for 1 second.

Thanks...that did not do the trick...I noticed however when I wanted to place the kmix epplet that it asked me if I wanted to use Soundblaster 1 or Soundblaster 2...perhaps something is being loaded twice and causing a conflict...I installed gnome and logged into it..whatever the problem it is related to KDE 3.2. I did a kill on artsd and rebooted...after reboot I had no sound output from xmms....however when I opened aumix, I got sound back for xmms. I noticed that for some reason the prefs in xmms don't allow sound to happen when I select alsa...it only works with OSS......anyone point me to detailed documentation on troubleshooting sound problems in KDE?

Ok..here is what I was finally able to do...

using kcontrol -----> sound config

click box for custom command...if running DevFS point it at /dev/sound/dsp
Then select the option to us an external player. I did not add anything in the path box..leave it blank]
At this point you should have sound.

This is MDK 9.2 with kernel 2.4.22-10mdk
Soundblaster Live! Value card
Asus mobo

Look at reading the man page(s) for urpmi there you will find your answer...however be aware that KDE 3.2 is not considered "stable" at this point, although other than sound problems I have not had a problem with other utils. There used to be a website http://www.easyurpmi.org/easyurpmi/index.php..it appears this site is no longer available to have it generate the addmedia command with path to mirror that made it easy to add cooker(the development tree) for mandrake...if you don't understand my post then I suggest you read up on urpmi and take it from there...and consider using main and contrib in the stable 9.2 tree for upgrades, or installations...
