Making programs lock to one desktop

Is it possible to make programs eg gaim and amsn to stay on the desktop you open them on? I find this annoying when sending emails etc and msn pops up.
I also miss messages when this happens.

I have googled to no avail.
Cant find anything in the settings either.

Using KDE 3.2 SuSE 9.1 (all updates)

i know kopete doesn't pop up anything, it just has a little bubble that appears in the system tray with a preview of the new message, and it stays out of your way. you might want to check out some of the preferences in gaim and maybe there's even a gaim plugin that will solve your problem. kopete is pretty configurable as well and you might want to look into it to see if it'll solve your problem.
