lost sound on fc4

I just got my notebook a few days ago. I have fc4 on it. I tested the sound and was able to play a CD. I even had streaming video and audio. I started transfering my data files and now I have no sound. I have no volume controller. The card and driver apparently are installed. I get no error messages when attempting to play sound, the programs appear to work fine to a deaf person except I cannot find that program to control volume.
Thanks for the help you are about to provide.

This is what solved my sound problem:

Open a terminal and login as root. Edit the file
/etc/modprobe.conf in a text editor such as vi or joe and remove any ending
whitespaces for each line. Save the file and reboot.
