I am launching a website and need a good FTP program to use. I had been using my Mac but want to start using Linux more. Is there a specific ftp program I should look at? I don't need anything fancy, just something easy to use to transfer files both up and down, etc.

If you use kde, I find konqueror (the kde file manager/browser) absolutely brilliant. It supports a zillion different protocols including ftp: and fish: (the latter for secure sites) once connected you use it to navigate the remote site just like your own box and all the normal operations work as you expect them to such as copying, moving, deleting, etc.

I recommend it very highly. If you don't use kde, there may be other file managers with the same functionality or you may get konqueror running by adding a few kde packages even if you don't use kde as your desktop manager.

Filezilla is good enough for me

You can use midnight commander from the command line.

I agree about konqueror. You can split it into two panes. On one side you can have a local directory. for the other enter the ftp url. Now you can simply drag files back and forth.

I like gftp very much. Check it out if you want to do ftp in a graphical environment.

Well, for web development and subsequent uploading I use Quanta. I prefer that over finding out what files have to be tranferred and doing that manually.

However, if I have answer the question just for FTP program, my vote goes to Krusader. Some say it is bloated, but it feels light, even on a less powerful computer. Like conqueror it has two panes, and you can ftp: and fish: In addition it has all buttons and commands of Midnight Commander, but running in KDE.

I've always used GFTP. It's pretty basic, but does everything I want.

I have been using gFTP, but not happy about it. When I try to delete entire directory and its contents on the ftp server of my ISP, the application does not delete entire directory. Instead, it logs you out from the server.

I've been also looking for a good FTP client and came across with this thread. I didn't know that FileZilla was available for Linux, so I downloaded FileZilla, but when I tried to launch it, I got an error saying libdbus-1.so.3 is missing. I just didn't want to go through install of all the missing file.

The Konqueror seems to work well as suggested in this thread from other replies. Maybe I should use Konqueror from now on, although I really like FileZilla, which I use in Windows environment...

As a matter of personal preference... If you're working on a website and will be using firefox to view and check what you've done. Maybe FireFTP would be a good choice. It's a pretty complete ftp implementation built as an add-on to Firefox. With that, you can have the ftp client in one tab, and the website in another to switch between.

Just a thought.
