Is it possible to listen to online radio station((in particular,Radio France) in Linux?
Is Debian offering such streaming software?
I have heard someone saying xmms can, but how exactly?
I tried to add url(www.radiofrance.fr) to url+, but nothing happened.
Which url should I add?

Furthermore, it seems that xmms does not play .rm .ram at all.
Do I need any plug-ins?

I've never been able to use xmms as a browser plugin. I went to the site you linked to and it's working well for me using the Mozilla FireFox, the Mplayer and mplayerplug-in

Have a nose for sites called icecast and shoutcast. You will be able to download files which you can point to with xmms and it'll connect to the linked radio station.

If the station broadcasts in Real Audio format then you'll need to install RalPlayer or a Real Audio plugin for xine or mplayer

This is about Radio France making their broadcasts available in Ogg Vorbis audio format (Free audio format). The information is from April 2003. I am not sure it is still true (last time I went to Radio France's site, I couldn't find anything else than proprietary audio formats... ).

For listening to Radio France - using xmms for instance- have a look at:

Launch xmms (probably /usr/bin/xmms),
then right click on the Xmms interface, select "Playlist editor" or whatever it is called in your language (in French "Editeur de la liste de lecture"),
then right click on the Playlist editor,
select Add->Url,
enter for instance http://ogg.tv-radio.fr:1441/encoderfinter.ogg for France Inter radio,
then double-click on it in the Xmms playlist editor. If your system is correcly configured, then you will hear the radio .

The other Radio France urls are the following (in Ogg Vorbis format):
(Ogg Vorbis is the famous lossless free & open audio format)

I did exactly what you wrote but I wasn't surprized to have a 404 Error (page not foiund). Radio-France doesn't give a damn about free format (by the way Ogg Vorbis is a lossy codec though better than mp3).

Some people on linux-fr.org have bitterly commented on the terroble quality of the ogg files when they are accessible.

At the moment ogg on Radio-France is a gimmick, and a joke. Shame on the national radio broadcast.

And does the website display well on Firefox? (Try France-Culture: can you see the left-hand menus in flash? i can't see any menus at all though the flash plugin is installed and works.

Mplayer works quite well. Using the plugin I was able to pull the URL:

I'm not sure france-bleue is available in the ogg format. I suppose you listened to that radio station in the WMA format.

For the moment I'm trying to see what I can listen to using Xmms and no Codecs32...

Well I used VLC (videoLan) a few hours later and I got something -- nothing beautiful but there was some muffled words and sounds.

So nothing to do with Linux anyway.

By the way VLC sounds better than Xmms -- a clearer more natural sound, better for classical music and strings.
