Linux in my car
I had the idea to make a simple machine (or maybe even use a mac-mini) that would fit in my car and run a screen so that it could show movies, or play music or maybe even do GPS stuf.
is there any program that brings these types of functions into a simple interface that could be controlled with say.... a keypad, or any other simple controll device?
FreeVo is kinda the type of interface im looking for, but its functions are obviously for use with a DVR, not a car.

I've always wanted to do this as well but I can't justify to myself spending the money on an experiment.
Have a read of this, I know it's Windows-based but it should give you a lot of ideas on how to properly implement some of the stuff in a professional way so it's just software to figure out later

I, too, would love to do this... given the money.
Mostly it's the screen that's stopping me.
I'm not aware of anything out of the box for car computers, but if I had the hardware, I'm sure I could come up with something, lol.

Ditto. Even more so because I reckon anything less than a touchscreeen wouldn't be doing the setup justice

Ill tell ya a xbox with Xbox Media Center makes a nice in car media center pc plus you can play games and you cant beat the price. You can even pop in a wireless card and get wifi networking when your car is in the driveway.

That is a very cool idea. However how would you power the Xbox? does anyone do an in-car adapter for the xbox?

I think a power inverter would be your best bet.

You'd need a special power supply to cut power to it when the engine is off and to protect it against start-up surges and the like. Something similar to: http://www.mini-box.com/s.nl/sc.8/ca...it.A/id.356/.f
