Question Linux hangs

Anybody know the real reason behind a linux system getting hung immediately after the "Freeing kernel memory ..." message ?

depends on what happens next.
if u wait, say, a minute, and a message appears about some hd then its not getting the right disk geometry. I also read Red Hat managed to slip some i686 rpm's on what was supposed to be an i386 installation, so init would die w/o notifying the boot process...

u could try if booting while adding "init=/sbin/sash" at the bootprompt works, and then try to gather error messages, verify ure install and hardware.
