Hi all, I was running into trouble with my RedHat 8 not handling my optical mouse properly, so after reinstalling it and the problem persisting I decided to install XFree86 4.30 as opposed to 4.20 that came with RH. I got it all working fine but now I get no login screen after booting; intead I
get a greyish checkerbardish-like screen with a small console on the lower right corner that keeps printing the following message:
"Console log for localhost"
where localhost is the name of my machine. In this screen the cursor looks like a clock. I cant enter any command nor anything. So what i am forced to do is switch to console 1 through "ctrl-alt-f1" login from there and issue a "startx -- :1"; Notice that I must use display 1 as otherwise it will tell me that the X server is already running on display 0. From here it will load the X server with KDE in it as this is my chosen desktop in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc
If I try instead to change that file to load gnome, this desktop will simply hang when loading. I have checked carefully etc/inittab to ensure it's booting on runlevel 5; I 've also attempted to add a link in /etc/rc.d/rc5.d to KDM, GDM and XDM hoping to have them running but it seems that they run except that they go in the background.
Here's my question, does anyone have any idea on how I can get the graphical login on boot instead of the grey screen? As you might see, i've attempted a few things already and I'm short of ideas, so anything that does not involve reinstalling the OS would be helpful.
Thanks in advance
nilb
PS: I installed using Xinstall.sh a tool that comes with Xfree86 4.30
Well, its no longer a mouse problem, as I said in my earlier post, nonetheless my mouse is a RetailPlus OptiEye. Whats concerning me right now is the loss of the graphical login.
As an update, I went on to change the redhat login configuration tool an chose "standard login", as opposed to "graphical" now when booting iget the login screen, but with this screen all it is loaded is twm, even when i choose to load KDE or Gnome.
Any ideas on what it may be? How can I get the graphical login screen back?
