It chose my main distro as the right one for me. I am pleased with that.

A place to start

The basic advice from the "Test" is a good place to start.

Someone suggested going with the distro that friends have so they can bail you out.

I have been given the sink or swim advice, "Just get a distro and try it out."

I am doing that with an old Red Hat 5.1 distro on a patched up 486 system. I finally got the install to install so I now can get to root. But, now I am having trouble setting up users using adduser command. I am wondering if everything showed up on the install.

I have a couple of other disks to try. Plus a couple of Live CDs. The Test suggested Mandriva so that is what I will look for this evening.

Go with something new!

1) more hardware supported.
2) more users to help you out
3) more autoconfigured options /devices
4) more available online resources

the list goes on and on. if you want something more difficult just get a new(er) slack or gentoo instead of mandriva.
