Linux + 64 bit = any good?

Hi. At some point in the upcoming months I will be buying a new computer. I am learning Blender and the computer will be mainly for graphic software such as Blender and Gimp. I want to make render times as quick as possible so i am looking at my options. Would a 64 bit arch be worth looking into more or does it cause too many headaches while trying to make things compatible with 32 bit software? Does anyone here use linux on 64 bits and what have your experiences been like? Thanks for any comments in advance.

Linux on 64 bit hardware

I use AMD 64 bit processors at work and at home, with the 64 bit version of Fedora Core 6. Other than some current issues with Nvidia hardware and OpenGL, I have no complaints. I'm a rank amateur with the gimp but use it successfully for very basic image manipulation and as a front-end to the xsane scanning tools. I've been running all of MySQL, Apache and JBoss for over a year and have had no issues.
