Linspire 5-0 and MP3?

Hi, I have a really weird problem with Linspire 5.0 the thing is I only seem to be able to play MP3's with mplayer. Everything else looks like it is playing the song, but there is no sound output. Similarly the same is true with all of my movie files. They will only play in Mplayer - and even then they refuse to scale properly. (The image looks really small and cannot be resized.

Is this something to do with restrictions placed on non click and run members and if so (or even if it is not so) does anyone have any suggestions on how I might be able to fix it?

Also does anyone have a good apt sources file with a mix of stable non free and contributed debian sources for debian Sid? I don't mind paying for the ISO - but I'm not very keen on paying for essentially free apps.

Best regards,

GJ

I have added my user to the audio and video group too... Just in case anyone might ask that... Also I have fixed the MPlayer scaling issue to an extent by setting the VO options in the mplayer.config to VO=GL2 - but I'm a bit rusty with Linux and I seem to remember that it is possible to have a config file with a whole bunch of advanced options - most of which are missing in my config file. Does anybody have a good Mplayer.config file that is usable on an Athlon 64Bit system (in non 64Bit mode) that will help improve the performance of Mplayer as much as possible?

Also, where does Mplayer keep its codecs in Debian? I have a nice fat Mplayer codec pack for it, but I can't find where the linspire guys have hidden their codecs.

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

GJ
