Smile kppp not connecting

I'm having problems with kppp or pppd. When I connected using kppp I try and ping somewhere but get no response.
Yet with ifup ppp0 it seems to work fine. Also once I've connected successfully with ifup if I ifdown then try kppp, kppp seems to work fine.
I am using mandrake 8.2 as a normal user.
settingup kppp with the following

chmod 666 /dev/modem
chmod u+s /usr/sbin/pppd
#cp --force configuration/options /etc/ppp/options
chmod +x /etc/ppp/peers/ppp0
chmod 0777 /var/lock

should I run the /etc/init.d/internet script before kppp?
or is there somekind of lock or permision problem?
Thanks in return
