Unhappy kontact not sending email

Hello and thanks for reading this thread.

I am a newbie and i've just installed Mandrake 10.0, i have configured kontact with my email settings (imap for receiving and smtp for sending) and i can receive emails okay but get the following message when trying to send them - failed to send (some) queued messages.

i was able to ping the smtp server okay so i guessed it was not a router/firewall problem. i therefore tried the exact same settings in opera's M2 and i could send and receive email with no problems.

I think that the problem must lie with kontact. If anybody has any ideas why kontact won't send mail i'd appreciate their help (please remember I am a newbie and not very clever).

Thanks again for taking the time to read my thread.

Works fine for me.

Under Configure Kontact --> Network --> Sending I chose SMTP, added mail.ntlworld.com in the name and host (I'm on NTL cable), kept the default port 25 and it all worked fine.

thanks for your reply iainr.

i did almost the same thing, Under Configure Kontact --> Network --> Sending I chose SMTP, added smtp.dsl.pipex.com in the name and host, kept the default port 25 and it didn't work at all.

As i said in my previous post i used the same setting in M2 (the Opera email client) and i didn't have one problem.

I am wondering if one of the options under common options on the sending tab is to blame.

i have the message property set as MIME Compliant and the Default Domain is localhost

I had the same problem when I "upgraded" from 9.2 -> 10. I couldn't fix it. I did a re-install. Sending mail worked great for awhile (couple months). Now, it just *stopped* sending again. When I try to send, my router or modem lights don't even blink. Something in the software is stopping it. I know my mail settings are correct because they worked this morning.
What the heck causes this?
Has anyone found out?
Also, Thunderbird works fine.

I like Kmail for the features, but, if it doesn't work, then T-Bird it is. (can T-Bird Bounce email?)

TIA,
Exo

Hello,

This is a rather weird bug...I think it has something to to with when you initially try to send a mail if your mail clients are not set up properly. I had it (I think) and I did this:

- settings
- configure Kmail
- network
- receiving
- add
- sendmail
- (use the default values)
- make the new 'sendmail' the default using the arrows on the rhs
- send the mail in your outbox
- delete the new 'sendmail'

This fixed it for me. I had to resend the mails that were in the inbox though - and even then I could not just go to the send mail and resend - I had to make entirely new mails.

I played around a little with your suggestions, but still no go. I don't have sendmail installed (I don't need it, I hope Kmail doesn't!). I removed my account settings entirely and put them back but still nothing.
I know it's not my ISP because my wife's computer sends mail no problem, and as mentioned above, T-bird has no problem.
Hopefully they find this bug soon.

If anyone else has any suggestions. Is their a settings file somewhere that can be tweaked? Anything?
I consider myself fairly knowledgeable with linux and have no problems messing around with config files (this side of re-compiling stuff! I don't think I should have to re-compile anything just to send email when it has worked in the past!), so any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks again,
Exo

What about your security settings? Anything there that possibly should be lowered?

For example, is any encryption being used?

Open Kmail. Goto path Settings/Configure Kmail.
Click the Security Icon. Click the OpenPGP tab.
Select "Don't Use Any Encryption Tool" from the dropdown menu.
Click Apply. Click Save.

Check the other categories for something unusual.

Hello,

Creating the 'sendmail' account - and then deleting it was the key to getting it to work for me......don't know why - but it worked!

Thanks for the suggestions people, but still nothing.

I wonder why this is the second time this has happened? And for no apparent reason. It just stopped sending mail. It's like it doesn't even try. Strange.

I tried setting the security settings like Xian suggested. No change.
I tried the sendmail suggestion, but it just tells me in can't find the sendmail binary.

On the status bar it just says "Failed to send (some) queued messages." Not helpful.
Is there a specific log file that I could check out that might offer some insight?

I'll use T-bird till I can get Kmail sending again I guess.

Thanks,
Exo

Excellent! Thank you Xian!

I followed this advice from the KDE bug site:

"smtp worked once I created a new identity with an email address, set it as default, restarted kmail, created a new message (messages created before the restart failed to send). "

My old identity DID have my email address but it still didn't work. I just created a new identity (EXACTLY like my original one incidentally), removed old outbox messages, restarted kmail, and now it works.

Not sure if it's the identity thing or the old messages that bung it up, or maybe a combo of both.

Thanks for all the suggestions and help people.
