Unhappy Konqueror and SMB:// protocol HELP

hi.
i have samba installed (emerged!) and i cannot use the konqueror protocol to see windows shares for example

smb://192.168.1.243/

it gives an error "protocol not supported smb".

What can i do to enable that protocol?

i use Gentoo linux.

thanks

Matteo

I'm using Gentoo 2.4.26-r9 and Kde 3.3.0 and I have the same problem. I emerged samba 3.0.7-r1, startet lisa and samba server from /etc/init.d/ and can see the machines on the LAN, but when opening the SMB folder in konqueror or type smb://192.168.1.35 (or any other valid IP) I get the following error:
Quote:
Could not start process Unable to create io-slave:
klauncher said: Unknown protocol 'smb'.
.
However, I can browse the shared folders on my gentoo box from winxp.

Actually when typing in smb://ip-address I get the following error:
Quote:
Protocol not supported
smb
and the other error message when typing lan://localhost/192.168.1.something/SMB

Also I'd prefer fixing the problem. Smb4k looks nice and I'll probably try it out but it'd be nice to have an answer to this problem.

Try this from a command line.

mount -t smbfs //hostname/share /mnt/share -o username=user

You must mkdir in /mnt. Something like share if you choose. You can then mount the drive and browse it with your gui or command line.

Yeah I can go to the mounted folder and browse nicely and I'll settle with this (since I was going to mount them anyways), but the error still remains. This method works fine for me so I'm good tho. If however someone knows how to fix the error message that would be nice.

Thx :-)

It works for me now, but I can't remember when and how I solved it :-(
Possibly something I did with the kernel a while back..

Edit: I don't use smb4k though

add kdebase3-samba package and check that smb protocol is activated in konqueror settings (previews&meta-data)
