kiosktool and getting the "next" button to work

I've installed kiosktool on Debian with a 2.6 kernel and KDE 3.2.2. In theory, it looks like it is exactly what I need to control the multitude of users that can log on to 12 boxes here (approx. 15 "casual" users per box!!) Unfortunately, I cannot configure kiosk using kiosktool because the "next" button never becomes active. I've edited my startkde script with
"export KDEDIRS=$(kiosktool-kdedirs)" as per the instructions with kiosktool. I have absolutely no idea what to try next
thanks
