killall process not working on AS 3.0

I now have several machines converted over to Redhat AS 3.0,
and on 2 of the machines, the killall command never recognizes any processes to send the signal to. On some other machines (that we believe are build the same), the killall command works just fine. When is fails, we always get the message 'No processes to kill' although ps clearly shows that the processes are still active.

Any ideas what may be different to cause this problem?

Is it just a certain process that is defiant, or do all processes ignore the killall?

Can you kill the defiant process with a:
kill -9 <pid>

Is the defiant process a zombie (check for zombie processes by using top)?

Is the defiant process hung, trying to talk to hardware?

Are you running the killall command as a suitably privileged user - one with a right to terminate the process?
