Question Kernel updating

I want to update my kernel. should i just do a complete kernel source install, or an update patch ?

how do i install that patch ? why is the kernel source so big, and the patch is very very small (like 665 KB) ?

step-by-step tutorial would be very nice and helpful

B.T.W., im using mandrake 9.0 with a 2.4.19 kernel i think

For a patch you need a previous kernel source so just the files that changed are "patched". The linux kernel is a pretty big project with millions of source code pages for the different parts like network device drivers, etc.
