Kernel Tree not Found

What do I need to do if I get the error message "kernel tree not found"?

I downloaded the kernel source, but I'm not sure if it is installed properly. Please help.

Thanks.

There is really no "installing" the kernel source. If you downloaded it and unpacked the tarball, then it is "installed." However, you need to be sure you have the same version as the kernel you are running or going to be running. There is no special place to put the kernel source. Your home directory works just fine. You may see reference to a /usr/src/linux symlink, but that hasn't been the case for years and is highly discouraged.

I presume you are trying to build software. What are you trying to build against the kernel? When you execute ./configure --help (assuming the package uses autotools) is there a switch that allows you to point to the directory containing the kernel source?

Thanks for the reply.

Okay. I installed the source like they say on here And they said to make a symbolic link. My /usr/src folder now contains a symbolic link named linux, linux 2.6.10 folder and a rpm folder. The kernel in use is 2.6.10-5. Does this sound right?

What I'm trying to do is to install my internal Wi-Fi card on my old laptop. A Dell Inspiron 5150. I want to set up a network with my new laptop for internet connection sharing. It has been a while since I used Linux and when I last used it I was using Debian and installed my PCI Wi-Fi card using ndiswrapper and rt2500. Thats why I'm thinking I should use that again. Am I right? If using Ubuntu now. This question is related to this thread I started to which I have had no replies yet. If you can have a look there it would be much appreciated.

Anyway... I get the "Kernel tree not found" error when running make in the ndiswrapper folder. This is what I get after running make:

Code:
make -C driver
Makefile:24: *** Kernel tree not found - please set KBUILD to configured kernel. Stop.
make[1]: Leaving directory '/home/crowndude/Desktop/ndiswrapper/ndiswrapper-1.51/driver'
make: *** [all] Error 2
Any ideas?

You need the configured source tree for your running kernel to build ndiswrapper, not a clean copy.
Since you are using Ubuntu, have you tried the ndiswrapper HOWTO in their community documentation --> https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wi...er/Ndiswrapper

BTW, those instructions for installing the kernel source are referring to the 2.2 kernel which is why they tell you to create the /usr/src/linux symlink. You don't need it with 2.4 and 2.6 kernels and having it can cause problems.

Seems like I got the original problem sorted out now. I think that symbolic link was causing the problem. Do you mind taking a look at this thread as that is related to the wifi card? Thanks.
