Exclamation KDE Upgrade

I am new to Linux and am using SuSe ver 8.1 and KDE 3.12 there is a new version of KDE out and have downloaded all file from KDE.org, BUT... there doesn't seem to be any way of easly updating or even installing it. ie: kdebase3 has 2 dependants, I have to admit that is one of the things I like about Windows soooo easy to upgrade

rpm depency hell :/

Couple thoughts:
-You can install apt4rpm (search LQ for more info)
-install the rpm's with rpm -uvh --nodeps (pretty dangerous, doens't check deps)
-Or simply leave KDE the way it is.

If you don't have probs with KDE now, and there are no major changes in the new version, I'd say don't bother updating.

Updating minor release versions is pretty useless anyway IMHO.

Apt-get can update kde while you sleep. remember to run the apt-get install from outside x.

See my sig for how to use apt to get kde..

Doh, that's for Redhat. Anyone know if they have a Suse version?

Yes, I have the SuSE version:
apt-0.5.4cnc9-1cl
synaptic-0.26-rb1
apt-devel-0.5.4cnc9-1cl

You can get it from:
www.rpmseek.com
else try rpm.pbone.net

The configuration is in
/etc/apt

To use it run as root:
apt-get update
apt-get install kdebase3 kdebase3-SuSE etc etc etc
apt-get upgrade
apt-get dist-upgrade

Or run the GUI version:
synaptic

Have fun :-)
