KDE menu editor addition fails

Sorry, failled to see the newbie thread. Can an admin move the post?

Newbie question here.

I am comming from windows and I am a recent convert to Linux.

I installed Fedora core 2 on my laptop after downloading it and burning it on cds.

All went surprisingly well, I was very happy about that, based on a previous bad experience I had on linux 3 years ago.

I installed linux, installed some softwares, like openoffice, Firefox and Zend dev studio and all went well save one thing, adding the new software to the kde menu with the kde menu editor. Fortunatelly for me, Open office was added automatically to the menu but all the others were not added.

The behavior is really simple
1) I try to add a "New item" with the kde editor
2) I fill in all the required fields, make my link to the application (firefox in this case).
3) I can now see the link in the left hand tree view.
4) I then click File/Save and I see a progress bar expand until completed and close the kde menu editor.
5) After that, no applications in the menu!
6) I come back in the editor and the options are no longer there....

I decided to try to do it manually, what a nice way to start learning Linux by going exploring under the hood. I wanted to find the file that was managing all those links, I thought that I might not have the right to write it, but I did not find it.

The best I was able to do was add my shortcuts to the desktop.

I searched about 2 or 3 days in forums and never found a reference to this kind of error. Is this something so basic that no one ever asks for that?

Help?

This is fairly common in KDE 3.2, I suffered it too under FC2 (and other KDE related badness which made me switch back to gnome).

I added Firefox to Kmenu>Internet>Firefox, saved it all fine, and it worked from the menu.

I found that I could add them to the menu and they would stay after a reboot, but once I opened kmenuedit again, it would no longer allow me to expand Internet, so I could not move or rename or add anything further to the Internet menu.

I thought it might be a one off so I decided to explore this and add something else to a different menu, this time Kmenu>Office and again - it would no longer allow me to expand the folder.

I also had problems with Kfind locking whenever I searched for a file (both on a fresh install and after yum updated everything, a problem I had in a previous post).

Wish I'd known to delete ~/.config folder then, and I might have stuck with it!
