KDE Menu Editing, SuSE 9.1 Professional

Boy this sure seems like it should be easy.

I want to edit the KDE Kicker Menu. I know about kmenuedit - but it apparently doesn't support what I want to do. For that matter, I'm not sure I can do what I want to do with the freedesktop.org menu specification.

Right now KDE's menus are structured like so...

Multimedia -> Volume Control -> AlsaMixerGUI
Multimedia -> Volume Control -> KMix
Multimedia -> Volume Control -> gamix
Multimedia -> Media Editing
Multimedia -> RealPlayer

Multimedia -> Media Editing isn't actually software. It's a category with only one piece of software in it, so it gets collapsed automatically.

Multimedia -> RealPlayer is exactly what I want to do - it doesn't exist as a category, but only by itself.

If you move Broadcast 2000 (the software pointed to by Multimedia -> Media Editing) so that it resides only in Multimedia, with no subcategory, KDE goes berserk and begins listing two of every icon/software under Multimedia under that category.

Worse, if you close kmenuedit and restart it you'll find the items that were moved no longer appear at all.

I can hand edit the files but doing that so that there isn't a subcategory on each item causes the first error of duplicate icons.

Anyone have any tips? I simply don't want a Category -> Subcategory -> Application hierarchy. I want a Category -> Application hierarchy.

Any help is appreciated.

Menu editing is broken after applying the kdebase updates from YOU. Either rollback to the stock version of kdebase and kdelibs or upgrade to 3.2.3

I wish they would fix this!

It's seems as if this may be a dead article, but hopefully bmschkerke will be able to benefit from it anyway.

I, too, ran into the same problem. I had three instances of Kaffeiene in my menu and just didn't want them in there. Ran KMenuEdit and got the duplicates. I figured that there had to be something in the settings that was making it so.

Here's what I found to remove my duplicate entries.

browsed to '/home/<username>/.config/menus'
opened 'applications-kmenuedit.menu' in my favorite text editor for KDE.

In there I saw this bit of information.

Code:
 <Menu>
  <Name>Multimedia</Name>
  <Menu>
   <Name>Music</Name>
   <Layout/>
   <Exclude>
    <Filename>kde-kaffeine.desktop</Filename>
   </Exclude>
  </Menu>
  <Menu>
   <Name>Jack and More</Name>
   <Deleted/>
  </Menu>
  <Layout>
   <Merge type="menus" />
   <Menuname>Administration</Menuname>
   <Separator/>
   <Menuname>AudioPlayer</Menuname>
   <Menuname>Burning</Menuname>
   <Menuname>CD Tools</Menuname>
   <Menuname>CD</Menuname>
   <Separator/>
   <Menuname>Jukebox</Menuname>
   <Menuname>AudioVideoEditing</Menuname>
   <Menuname>More Programs</Menuname>
   <Menuname>Music</Menuname>
   <Menuname>AudioVideoRecorder</Menuname>
   <Menuname>Sequencer</Menuname>
   <Menuname>TV</Menuname>
   <Menuname>VideoPlayer</Menuname>
   <Menuname>Mixer</Menuname>
   <Merge type="files" />
   <Filename>realplayer.desktop</Filename>
  </Layout>
  <Menu>
   <Name>CD</Name>
   <Layout>
    <Merge type="files" />
    <Filename>kde-kscd.desktop</Filename>
   </Layout>
  </Menu>
  <Menu>
   <Name>Jukebox</Name>
   <Layout/>
  </Menu>
 </Menu>
 <Menu>
  <Name>.hidden</Name>
  <Include>
   <Filename>kde-kaffeine.desktop</Filename>
  </Include>
 </Menu>
The Section in Red, I removed and then saved the file. Clicked on the menu, and viola, duplicates gone.

Hope this helps.
