Kaffeine only responds to input if you shake the window with the mouse

I've just installed Kaffeine 1.2 on Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid?) but the problem was the same with the Kaffeine 1.0 that shipped with Ubuntu.
When playing back a file from disk, you can pause using the mouse or the space bar shortcut and the screen displays the message "paused", but the image doesn't pause until you shake the window with the mouse. It sounds completely weird but it's too consistent to be coincidental. It's the same with jump forward & volume. Stop is instant and so is play, but the other controls don't respond until you shake the window with the mouse. I'm not drunk and I've only had one anti-histamine.
Has anyone seen anything like this before?
