This time I'm having huge problems with my Plextor DVD+-RW drive. I'm trying to burn dvd-r with k3b&growisofs. It doesn't even start to burn with error message:
":-( Failed to change write speed: 5540->2770
Fatal error at startup: Invalid argument"
The funny thing is, I can write to DVD+RW discs without problems. Also CD burning works perfectly. I tried 3 different brands of DVD-R discs, nothing worked. They all work in Windoze though.
I have tried 3 versions of k3b and about 4 different versions of DVD+RW-tools. I had to try the RPM-versions, because I'm such a n00b on compiling things. I read on this forum that the RPM-versions of DVD+RW-Tools are somehow screwed up or something...? It could be because of that.
Now, of course I would have tried the source version of DVD+RW-Tools, if I knew how to compile it. All I know, that it doesn't go like ./configure, make, make install. Here are the files that I found on the dvd+rw-tools-5.19-1.4.9.7.tar.gz archive:
If you run k3b as root: kdesu k3b, go to the setup k3b option.
You can get a summary of the programs and version used.
Also, click on devices. Which cdrdao mode is selected? There is a plextor and a plextor-scan mode. Sometimes selecting generic-mmc fixes things. One of these 3 options may work.
My Mandrake 10 Community setup uses:
cdrao 1.1.8-pre2
cdrecord 2.1a26
dvd+rw-format 4.8
growisofs 5.17
mkisofs 2.1a27
You might want to compare, might give you a hint on which may need to be upgraded.
Keep in mind that I don't have a plextor drive.
I've tried a couple different versions of the cdrdao, cdrecord etc. packages, but I still get the same error. I also tried the different cdrdao modes. No luck.
It's definetly not a k3b problem, tried 3 different versions. Now I have the latest version installed, compiled from source. Still, cd-burning and dvd+rw work fine.
I've played around with different version of those packages for couple of days now. Still the same error message. I googled a bit and found out that I'm not the only one having problems with Plextor PX-708A and Linux. So please, if there's anyone reading this beeing able to write dvd-r's with Plextor PX-708A in linux, post a reply so I know that I haven't wasted a lot of time for nothing. Cause if its not even possible....
Good ideas are welcome.. (even if you're not a Plextor user )
Daliz- I'm thinking of completely switching my OS over to Suse 9.1 Pro, I have a Plextor 708 as well and before I switch I want to make absolutley sure that it will burn DVD+R's OK and that it's just DVD-R's you're having trouble with.
an upgrade of dvd+rw-tools seems to do the trick. Burning now, but at too slow speed. More info on http://fy.chalmers.se/~appro/linux/DVD+RW/hcn.html Aparantly one must "trick" it to burn with correct speed.
I got K3b to burn on my MSI 8xDVD +-R/RW drive by telling it to ignore speed with -r media. i just got the drive and havent tried any other media. im usiing FC2 worked fine for me once i worked out to tell it to ignore speed it burnt at 4x which is the -r maximum spped on my drive.
I still don't get it why it didn't work earlier. I used MDK10CE back then and few days ago I upgraded to official and now it works. dvd+rw-tools version is still 5.17....
Thanks to everybody, I just wanted you to know that it works now.
I upgraded to the latest version of dvd+rw-tools and everything works perfect. Apparently you need growisofs version 5.19 for everything to work properly with the Plextor drive.

Could you please tell me how to do that so I'd get it working again?
E: Hmm I was stupid, I just had to type 'make' . Ok I got it installed but it still doesn't work..
Upgraded to k3b 0.11.11 and the latest dvd+rw-tools.. and it doesn't work. On the dvd+rw-tools website in hardware compatibility list it says that PX-708A with 5.19 should be ok. Hmmh.. I'm out of ideas here
