Java RE will not install, have tried everything!

Hi,
I'm running Mandrake 10.1, and have installed Firefox, but cannot use java applications, since it says i need JRE. I have followed every instruction for installing Jre and Firefox refuses to use it. I downloaded the JRE linux RPM and installed it per the instructions.

jre1.5.0_04 is installed into /usr/java/

I've done the symbolic link from the Jre plugins folder to the Firefox plugins folder. libjavaplugin_oji.so is showing up in the Firefox plugins folder.

Firefox has Java enabled, and java still will not work.

Does anyone have an idea why i'm having this problem? I've done as Java and Firefox installation instructions have both indicated, but no dice! Thanks for any help.

Cory

can you show the ls -l output to show the plugin is there, it's pretty easy to create an invalid symbolic link for example. Also in firefox go to aboutlugins in the address bar and that will list the found plugins

HI Chris,
Doing ls -l shows:

total 20
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 58 Oct 1 15:44 libjavaplugin_oji.so -> /usr/java/jre 1.5.0_04/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so*
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 18840 Sep 20 15:46 libnullplugin.so*

But, when I do aboutlugins in Firefox, it only shows :
Default Plugin
File name: libnullplugin.so
The default plugin handles plugin data for mimetypes and extensions that are not specified and facilitates downloading of new plugins.

So Java plugin isn't showing up in the browser. Any ideas? Thanks alot.

well that's poinitng to the netscape plugin, nit the mozilla version. real subtle differences but most jre's have a seperate plugin file for mozilla products

Ok i've got it working now. I downloaded the JRE rpm from rpm.pbone.net and it worked in Firefox immediately.
