Java not functioning in Firefox

I know a lot of people have posted on this one, and I have read the answers, BUT

I downloaded the latest version of Java (1.6) from Sun and installed it. I then made a link from .mozilla/plugins to the file libjavaplugin_oji.so and instructed Firefox to enable Java. Firefox has certainly done soemthing, because it's added a lot of Java entries to the file .mozilla/firefox/pluginreg.dat but the test on Sun's site shows that Java is not active.

What more can I do?

I'm using Fedora 6 and Firefox 1.5

What???? You did something wrong..........

First the link to the libjavaplugin_oji.so is placed into the /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins directory so all users can have access/use of the plugin.

Second, which versions of FC6 and firefox do you have;

uname -a
rpm -qa firefox

You do know that the 32-bit jre is not compatible with the 64-bit version of firefox.

This is the sort of non-answer, Lenard, which spoils LQ by making people think a posting has been answered when it hasn't!

I didn't say that all users couldn't use Java: I said that it doesn't work at all. If you weren't meant to put things in .mozilla/plugins it wouldn't be there, nor would putting something there cause Firefox to add entries to the plugin registry file.

Just to make my point, I've added a link from /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins -- and that doesn't work either.

I don't have a 64-bit system, but if I did I would know not to add a 32-bit plugin to a 64-bit program!

For any one in the same situation, the solution is to use Red Hat / Fedora's Iced Tea. This not only works (once the link from .mozilla/plugins/gcjwebplugin.so to /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.7.0-icedtea/jre/lib/i386/gcjwebplugin.so is made) but even convinces Sun's test program that it's Java!
