Is there a console app to read/write ID3 version 2 tags?

I'm looking for an app to read/write ID3 tags (of MP3 files) that supports current formats. I use id3tool and mp3info now, but they support only old 30-character tags. I tried everything at the id3.org: the console stuff is all old; the more modern works only in X (or Windozzzze).

The current version isn't id3v2? If so, then I use id3v2. It's packaged in the Debiian universe, and the home is http://id3v2.sourceforge.net/.

Try using the search feature of your distribution's package manager. It's usually a good, quick way to discover what's readily available.

Some more options for you:

eyed3 and python-eyed3
mid3v2 (included in the python mutagen package)

Slackware (my distribution) has no tools for reading/writing ID3 tags. Of course I looked there first. It has 2 sets of libraries that support reading/writing v1 and v2 tags, but no apps.

id3v2 works. I downloaded it and tried to build it but gave up when id3lib wouldn't build (worried that they were so old they wouldn't help much). I found the patch that fixed id3lib to work with gcc 4.3.

thanks.
