Question Is /sbin/update-modules replaced in Suse SLED 10 SP1

Hello,

I'm quite new to Linux and ran into a problem with Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 SP1 when I tried to install ndiswrapper with my USB dongle F5D7050B from Belkin for wireless networking. It is the version with the rt73 chipset.

I printed the how-to which can be found on de Novell/Suse website (http://www.novell.com/support/search...200%2050730941).

Steps 1 to 5 went without a problem.

Step 6 however, the configuration of ndiswrapper to tell the system that it needs to load ndiswrapper for device wlan0, gives me some troubles:

First I had to chmod ndiswrapper and the file /etc/modprobe.d/ndiswrapper.

After entering the command ndiswrapper -m (in SU-mode) I first get the message 'Adding "alias wlan0 ndiswrapper" to /etc/modprobe.d/ndiswrapper' Then I get a message saying that it did not succeed. Looking in the perl-script I found that "/sbin/update-modules" should be on the system.

To be able to repeat the command I have to remove the object ndiswrapper in /etc/modprobe.d/

Today I searched the internet on this command and came to the conclusion that this function is no longer default installed on a SLED 10 SP1 installation.

Can anyone tell me if this function has been replaced by something new and/or how to install the original function since I would like to install the ndiswrapper to get my linux box connected to the network.

On Debian and looks like Suse the update-modules is depreciated the way it is supposed to work now is any files that are in the modprobe.d disrectory are automatically processed by modutils on boot and any settings in them used when modprobing/setting up the modules. So I would try just adding the alias manually to a file in the directory rebooting and see if this works.
