Interpreting dmesg output

A typical line that I get from dmesg is
Code:
[75573.981776] usb 3-1: USB disconnect, address 4
What does the text in square brackets mean? How can I see the time of the message?

In other systems I've been running, the time shows up explicitly in the dmesg output. I'm running Kubuntu 8.04.

Looks like time-since-boot. Doesn't the message show up in your syslog?

That is indeed a time-since-boot (in seconds, I believe). On what system has dmesg shown actual times? I've actually never seen that.
