I have a 64 bit RHEL machine. I would need to work with MS office files and therefore require wine to be installed in my RHEL machine so that I can run a few native windows applications. I downloaded the wine executable untarred it and while i tried to install it, I hit the following error.
configure: error: Cannot build a 32-bit program, you need to install 32-bit development libraries.
Mine is a 64 bit machine. After searching through the forums, I restarted the installation with the command ./configure --enable-win64. The installation completed successfully but when i tried to execute wineconfig, it gave me an error on line 52 exec cannot find wine. I added the path (usr/local/include) of the wine directory to the PATH environment variable but it didn't work (because, that was the exec command in line 52 was trying to do). I edited the config file to point to /usr/local/include but failed again. I didn't find the wine directory in my home directory either. My research on the internet leads me to think that wine can only be compiled on a 32 bit platform. Are there any work arounds for this issue? or could any of you suggest an alternative application? Thanks for your time!!
1) don't work with MS Office on Linux in the first place
2) pay for a Crossover Office license and run MS Office much more easily than on raw wine
3) install 64bit wine from EPEL
4) install 32bit wine from Repoforge, yum will handle the dependencies
My apologies for the delay in my reply. I managed to install playonlinux. There seems to be a lot of dependencies that must be sorted out when installing wine. I've created a windows VM. This should get me going with those MS applications that I need. Thanks for your time and help. Cheers!!
