Installing new programs

Hi...

How do you install new programs in ubuntu?

I know how to, when using the 'add apps' function, but when i downloaded another program than on the list, i dont know how to install it.

Which format should it be in? .gz ?

If it is a .gz file you'll need to unpack it first then cd to the directory, then on the command line type

./configure
make
su
make install


If it is a .deb file (which is what ubuntu uses) then on the command line you would type.

dpkg -i packagename.deb
