installing java

i'm new to linux, i'm using fedora core 3 and i got a problem.

i want to install java sdk so i went to sun.java.com and downloaded self-extracting file (j2sdk-1_3_1_15-linux-i586.bin, 25.42 MB). than i followed their installation instructions and everything was fine. the trouble is that the last step is to accept licence agreement, suposedly you can do this by clicking on accept button but i don't see any accept button.

those files have extension .bin and the program i use to open them is emacs. could anyone provide me the screenshot of this button or a detailed description where to find it.

thanks in advance

If you just quit out of the licence with the "q" key you should be prompted to accept it.

Don't use emacs. Do the following (in the directory you downloaded it to):
chmod +x j2sdk-1_3_1_15-linux-i586.bin
./j2sdk-1_3_1_15-linux-i586.bin

You are supposed to execute the file, not view it in a text editor like Emacs.

Hope this helps!

Welcome to the wonderful world of Linux, by the way.

just an addition to what uman said. after you run the executable, you will be prompted to accept/decline the agreement. once the install is complete, you have to modify your PATH found in your $HOME directory; the file should be called '.bash_profile' in Fedora Core 3. hope this helps!

Almir, you're hopeless. I told you to get onto ICQ and I'd have helped you. In stead, you spam every forum available. lol

You can edit your PATH variable through /etc/profile, just you
need root access to do that, and it affects every user. Just add this at the bottom of /etc/profile-

PATH=$PATH:/home/username/j2sdkdirectory/jre/bin:/home/username/j2sdkdirectory/bin

What that will do is set the PATH variable to what it already has, and add all the stuff in ./jre/bin, and ./bin.

Hope this helps!
