Unhappy Installed alsa utils package and drivers. On boot up I get Kernel panic not syncing

Hi all

Recently was having problems with playing sounds and wasnt able to run my alsa mixer. I downloaded the utils and drivers package from the alsa website and installed them. Rebooted the machine and was faced with what seems like a fairly serious error:

[<fffffffff884de0f8>] :snd_hda_codec: snd_hda_codec_build_controls+0x2b/0x36

and various other similar messages followed by:-

code:48 89 a8 88 00 00 00 48 8b 45 68 48 c7 80 90 00 00 6c f2

Kernel panic - not syncing: fatal exception.

I guess what I really want to know is how do I return my machine to its previous settings?
For the meantime im pressing escape during bootup and selecting to run up what looks like anolder version of the OS and this works.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

apples and oranges sorry one has nothing to do with the other so pick a topic. this sounds like you rebuilt a kernel and installed it and you messed it up.
always keep a spare operating kernel for your system when building a kernel. do like I do start over. ask yourself why I need newer alsa drivers when they come released per kernel. you may want to upgrade the utilities and libraries but alsa drivers have been put in the kernel to be handled by kernel org.

12 years ago we would have to buld the alsa drivers out side the kernel now days it is inside the kernel even though you down loaded them.
start over and watch out if you are using a system with a initrd.img
a kernel panic is caused by not finding the root and that can be caused by not having the driver to load to see the partition.
and not matching your initrd.
Hard stop must push the button to reboot.

Hi Drakeo,

Thanks for the reply,

I thought this was linked as my machine worked fine before I installed this alsa package and now it doesnt. This is the only change I have made to my machine so my thinking was that there had to be a link with me installing these updates and the machine not working?. With regards to me rebuilding a kernel and trying to install it: Thats not the case.

I understand what you have said with regards to not needing to install any alsa software but I was having an issue with playing sounds and thought maybe the sound was turned down in the alsa mixer. On trying to open my alsa mixer I got an error message saying the file did not exist even though it did, so I downloaded the utils package in the hope of sorting this out.

Thankfully I have another Grub to use on bootup so its not the end of the world.

I take it there is nothing I can do to salvage the original kernel?

Again thanks for your help

sure there is a way to salvage the other kernel. when you tell me the distro O/S and you tell me what you did. link and and build?
there is software that runs the system that uses the drivers alsa has drivers built into the kernel then there is alsa utilities and alsa lib.
stop thinking W$dose. when you tell me theses three things we can start.
1 distro -v version ?
2 uname -r kernel
3 alsa version
