Installation errrors (what am I doing wrong now)

Hey everyone, Im new to linux and I know you all roll your eyes when you see people like me, but this is the problem I am having ... I am trying to install wine so I can use windows apps, this is what the command prompt is telling me

root@ubuntu:/home/matt/Desktop/wine-20041019 # ./configure && make depend && make && su -c "make install"
checking build system type... x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu
checking host system type... x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu
checking whether make sets $(MAKE)... yes
checking for gcc... gcc -m32
checking for C compiler default output file name... configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables
See `config.log' for more details.

Any ideas on how to install?

are you logging in as root? and no we are here to help you. But I have never seen gcc say it cannot make bins.
So just to verify
download source
uncompress
./configure
make
make install

right?? and it stops you with make while log in as root?? <not root equivilent but root??

Yes, I am using Ubuntu and there is no "root" in ubunto, any user can be root as long as they know the password, when I click command prompt it asks for the root password.

it appears that the gcc does not have the permissions to create files. it is missing libc6-dev. Go get and install. Should take care of it.
