tar xzf firefox...

the f option needs to directly preceed the filename

your commands are very confusing... file:/home ?? that's totally invalid.

Code:
cd /home/skiddie/Desktop
tar xfz firefox-0.9.1-i686-linux-gtk2+xft.tar.gz
I think your cd command isn't working.

no it doesn't actually matter, but doesn't relate to the error messages either way.

Sorry, acid_kewpie. I should have checked it before posting. I knew that 'tar -x -f -z -v <filename>' wouldn't work (just the way getopt_long works), but didn't know about this one.

Best,
Max

i have already provided what i would interpret to be corrected versions of the commands you are attempting to run. if they do not work, paste REAL error messages that each commands provide.
