Image viewing on widescreen monitors

Hello all. This should be an easier answer than it is proving to be as far as google is concerned. My images are stretched and skewed with my widescreen 1280x1024 monitor. My resolution is fine, everything looks and works great, including gimp. But normal image viewing programs just cant seem to get it right. Fit to window, fit to screen, half size, etc. etc. They don't seem to work right. I'm talking gwenview and kview. I can't find a setting to make it right. If you have recommendations for better programs, please let me know.

I believe your problem is indeed resolution. If you have a widescreen monitor, then 1280x1024 is going to distort your images because it is not a widescreen resolution. 1280x1024 has a screen ration of 5:4, which is not widescreen. Most widescreen monitors have a few "native resolutions" that will give peak performance. For instance, my 19" wide screen looks great at 1440x900 but looks a little off at any other res. The best thing to do would be to check your manual for the recommended resolution for your monitor. Aside from that, there's a good article at Ask.com (http://compreviews.about.com/od/mult...a/LCDSpecs.htm) that has some suggested resolutions for different sized and quality of screens, both wide and standard resolution.

Here are some widescreen resolutions to try for different sized monitors from that article . . .
Quote:
# 19” (Widescreen): 1440x900 (WXGA+)
# 20” (Widescreen): 1680x1050 (WSXGA+)
# 24” (Widescreen): 1920x1200 (WUXGA)
# 30” (Widescreen): 2560x1600
Once you pick a resolution, make sure both your xorg.conf and your window manager are using that resolution. I noticed that, although my xorg had 1440x900 at the top level resolution, I had to specifically tell Gnome to use that res in the Preferences menu before it took effect.

Yep, I'm a big idiot. Twas totally using a non-widescreen resolution. I switched to 1680x1050 and everything looks great now =) Thank you.

Fabulous. Isn't it great when the fix for a problem leaves you with a better system than you'd hoped for?
