Image/Photo Editing

I'm trying to find an easy to use photo editing app, in particular I would like to be able to draw a rectangle, or circle and then blur the selected area.
I've tried a few and none offer a simple way of doing this, or if they do I've missed it.

I've tried: FOTOXX
RawTherapee
GIMP
ImageMagick
Pinta
Pix
Mypaint isn't too bad.
Krita as well

Any other suggestions folks?

Haven't had time to try them all out yet, but have installed several of the ones on your list, as well as:
inkscape
mtpaint
Karbon

The GIMP will do what you want.
The icons to control each function are right there in the upper left hand corner.
Perhaps, it just does it differently from they way you are use to doing it?

GIMP.

From the menu:
Tools... Selection Tools... Rectangle Select (or Ellipse Select)

Then select the region.

Back to menu:
Filters... Blur... (select blur type)

Then apply blur.

this is very easy to do in gimp

To add to Beryllos's post (#4)

then select > feather and use a large value then use the Gaussian blur filter

As an aside, you will find excellent video tutorials on using the GIMP here: https://meetthegimp.org/

Watch the first four or five and your friends will think you're a photo artist.

I've followed an earlier method, worked like a dream, but what do you mean by "feather" - I can't find it on any menu's as an option - GIMP 2.8.16
