I lost my disk drive!

I have an external (usb) disk drive. It was nicely partitioned into two partitions - but suddenly it 'died'. When I plug it in, the OS recognises that there is a disk drive there but Windows asks me if I want to format it now.

I think that everything on the drive is also elsewhere - so I could just start from scratch - but is there some tool that might work out what the partitioning was and put it back?

You might be able to fix the problem with gpart.
