Question I keep having to set Firefox as default browser over Thunderbird.

Hi.

I used to use the Thunderbird from their website for a good while as the TB in Debian 8 was prone to odd behavior. I've recently decided to go back to the Package Manager Thunderbird on Debian 9.
I keep getting this message [image 1] in Firefox. It happens when I unsuspend the PC and open Firefox, when I launch Firefox in safe mode (I need to to access a particular website in safe mode) and then later launch the regular Firefox, etc. I click on the 'Use Firefox as my default browser' button but in Control Center, I still have to change the default browser [image 2] - it says Thunderbird for some weird reason.

I've tried this but it has not fixed the issue:

Code:
sudo update-alternatives --config x-www-browser

I looked at this yesterday, and, frankly, I didn't have clue, and still don't. The oddest thing about it is that the system in seeing Thunderbird as a browser, instead of as a mail client.

To make sure I understand, this happens only after the computer has been suspended, not after a reboot or hibernation (if you use hibernation--I don't myself)?

What desktop environment are you using? I ask because file associations are commonly set in the DE's control center.

The next time this happens, maybe you could tail some log files to see if they contain anything relevant.

As an aside, I'm curious to know what you mean by the phrase "Package Manager Thunderbird" in your original post.

Meanwhile, I'm nominating this for the kookiest problem of 2018 award.

Hi Frank.

It does not always happen after suspend.
I'm using MATE.
By "Package Manager Thunderbird" I refer to the Thunderbird from the repos and not from the Thunderbird website.

.

Thanks. As an aside, I suspect that most persons would assume you are using a program from the repos unless you specify otherwise.

Keep us posted the next time this happens, including whether the compute was suspended, hibernated, or just running normal. It could be that those conditions are coincidence, but not related.

Good luck.

I tried that a day or two ago. Today, I went into FF safemode. When I left FF safemode and clicked on a link in Thunderbird, when it tried to open the link in FF - that window to set FF as default returned (I unchecked the box again). Also, Thunderbird was set as my default browser again in Control Center>>Preferred Applications.

It's strange alright that TB is showing on the preferred browsers dropdown section.

What DE are you using? I ask because I have a Debian 9 box and would like to see if I can duplicate this.

I'll take a look tomorrow; I made a note and taped it to the monitor.

I was unable to duplicated your problem.

First, I had to install Thunderbird and MATE on my Debian 9 system (after configuring a new router because the old one died a couple of days ago--I'm been getting along on my cell phone hotspot, which had performed much better than expected). Then I logged into MATE and the only item listed in the MATE Preferred Application-->Web Browser dialog was Firefox.

Thunderbird was properly listed under the Mail Reader dialog, along with the other mail clients that Debain installs by default.

I have no idea what's going on, but it seems to be some sort of hiccough with your system. I'd be curious to see the results if other persons reading this thread would attempt the same test.

Sorry I couldn't help.

It just happened again - all I did was open Firefox after previously closing it before suspending the PC. I had to re-set from TB to FF in preferred apps section again.
