I don't get the relationship of Sawfish and GNOME 2.0

Ok I don't really get this. I can download a GTK 2.0 theme and install it. The window border changes, and all is well. But then I go to the Sawfish part, and I can change the window border there as well. Is sawfish the window manager of GNOME 2.0? Is Sawfish GTK 2.0 based? I am confused about Gnome 2.0 in general really.

Sawfish is not GTk dependent ( not sure) .It is the default window manager of gnome and comes with gnome package.
