I also tried installing it from the menu, but it still froze up. What happened? The install vmware tools in the menu turns to cancel installation, but it never finishes installing.

1) you exited before installing kernel headers, what more do you want us to say?..
2) becoming familiar with the distro that Kali is based on would help.

it says "waiting for gateway.wifast.com" and "could not resolve http://kali.org" - could this mean you're trying to do this from a public wifi hotspot? which won't let you connect to kali.org?
I tried that also, but also found out that I didn't have a vmware image. I had a normal ISO. I'm downloading a prebuilt vmware image or kali 2.0 and then looking at the repos of that to make sure they are correct. I think that might be the problem. If it is, then I'll install vmware tools on that and I think it will be fine. I don't know yet, but wish me luck.
