html/php photo questions

i want to write a script to automatically write a webpage containing a table of pics from a folder of pics.
i want to the table to make the pictures links to pages with just large images of the clicked picture.
in otherwords when you click on a picture form the tabel of picture you get a page of just hte large version that one picture.

i know html, i know bash, dont know php, but willing to learn.

what is the best way to do this?
or is it a waste of time because its been done already?

thanks

Download gallery, that would be a start and it would also allow you to learn php when your hacking at it..

I believe its gallery.sourceforge.net is the homepage.
