How to stop Ubuntu from updating itself?

Hi,
I run Ubuntu 10.10, and all of a sudden these days I find my light flashing on the router, i.e. it's accessing the net. I did a top and I see something called "ubuntuone-syncd" or something like that near the top of the list. I want to turn this OFF as I DON'T want Ubuntu to update itself.
How please?

Thanks.

Thats the UbuntuOne file storage/synching service, nothing to do with updates. If you have no use for Ubuntus online file storage service and want to remove it then see here.

ACtually I don't think it was that - I was doing a "top", and I saw a process called "http". Everytime I kill this process, the lights stop flashing.

Does anyone know where this process comes from? How can I get rid of it?

The first thing you should do is actually updating your OS. 10.10 is end of life and not supported anymore, it will get neither security updates nor bugfixes.
If you have done that and the misbehavior still occurs please provide the outputs of the commands
Code:
ps aux
lsof -i

Somewhere in the menu will be a tool for configuring which programs are run at log-in. Have a look to see if the updates service is one of them. If it isn't, install BUM which enables you to control which daemons are started at boot-up.

But you do need to update first. The current 12.04 is a long-term-support version that will be supported for 3 years.

12.04 is now supported for 5 years, both server and workstation platforms.

You can turn automatic updates off via synaptic, settings > repositories > updates tab and change "Automatically Check for Updates" to never.
