how to set "wrapping size" in VIM

I use vim for some coding or editing in console. since the auto-wrapping of long lines happens at the right edge of the console window, sometimes it is too wide to read and edit comfortably. I'd like to reduce the wrap size, for example, only 30 chars each line.

I check the help, and find a parameter called "wrapmargin", which looks like exactly what I want. unfortunately, no matter what value I set by issuing the command ": set wrapmargin=10", no effect happens at all.

anybody knows how to set wrap size?
