How to configure apache 1.3.27 after installing it in my linux account?

Hi,
I have installed apache in my home directory (~home/apache not as root) on a linux server. I am able establish a telnet session ex telnet hostname 8080 , connects to the server. But GET /HTTP/1.0 returns aerror message( index.html is the request, it says invalid method)
I tried to connect thro browser ex lynx hostname/IP_address with the same result. Port 80780 is free and the server is running but I am not able to get html pages. Please help.

There is an httpd.conf file under installation_root/etc/. It sounds like you have a *lot* of work to do to make this usable.
