How to change the runlevel from 5 to 3 before boot?

I have a default runlevel of 5 where the x-server crashes and takes no key strokes from the keyboard. I want to boot into runlevel 3 to edit xorg.conf. This is SuSE 11.3_64 with GRUB.

Anybody who knows how to tell GRUB to please comply with this from the GRUB command line (or however else)? Thanks in advance .

Boot into single user mode (append "single" to the kernel command line in grub), then type "init 3" to boot to runlevel 3 (or just edit xorg.conf in single user mode)

Or you could append the number 3 to the kernel command line in grub and boot directly into runlevel three.
