Thanks to Mr. HappyTux

Module-assistant makes a .deb file package that needs to be installed either with the install option of its interactive interface or using dpkg -i package.deb. So did you do either of those to install?
I did do the install from module-assistant, and there is no rt2500.ko file in ../drivers/net.
Am continuing w/ my plan to get make menuconfig running in hopes it will set up a proper
build directory.

You would need to build exactly the kernel for it to work the headers installed should be enough if the link is correct that is what the m-a prepare does. If it did not then use something like this.

How to compile a kernel module that is reluctant!
I wanted to let you all know how it worked out.
The original problem was that I could not get a kernel module for a new
wireless card to compile properly. The Makefile kept throwing errors stating
that the kernel source could not be found. After learning enough about modules
and kernel compilation, I realized that the Makefile was probably written for
a different distro, and so was looking in the wrong place for my kernel headers.
I actually had to edit the makefile to point it at the proper kernel-headers directory.
Then the compile worked and my wireless card works just fine!! Thanks for
helping me be sure that I had all the tools I needed so that I could trace my
problem down to a bad makefile.
I am slowly writing up a full driver install procedure that explains about compiling modules
using kernel headers.
