How to access a shared Windows drive from Linux?

I have a windows computer and a FC8 machine. On FC8, is it possible to access (our mount) directories shared by Windows machine? Also, is it possible to share special directories such as C$?

Modern distros usually configure the existing windows disks automatically. It should show up somewhere on your file manager menus or like that. However, you probably have to mount it manually. Can you post your /etc/fstab file?

best,
Ott

concoran refers to a windows installation on another computer otoomet as far as I understood.

Take a look here http://www.my-guides.net/en/content/.../26/1/4/#smb4k You can easily mount all shares including C$ with smb4k.

I can access the FC (Redhat) only through a terminal window. It is possible to mount using commands, rather than GNOME or KDE?

The "$" just keeps the drive from showing up in the browser. I think you would use //<hostname>/C in the mount command. However if that doesn't work try //host/C$. However, you should never share the C:/ or any system directory in windows (or any OS). That is very dangerous, and makes it easy for viruses and malware to spread.

See the man pages for "mount", "mount.cifs" and "fstab" for instructions on how to mount a windows share.

Here is an example for a "guest" samba share on another Linux computer:
Code:
//hpamd64/wildswede /home/jschiwal/wildswede cifs noauto,defaults 0 0
For an other type of share, you would indicate the username & password and maybe use the "gid", "uid", "file_mode" & "dir_mode" options. If you need to use the "smbfs" filetype then use "fmask" & "dmask" instead of "file_mode" & "dir_mode".
